GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK: This is a position in the maintenance of security in an adult Direct Supervision Correctional Facility. The Correctional Officer works under the direct supervision of the Jail Administrator or a higher-ranking correctional supervisor and on an assigned shift. The Correctional Officer carries out the duties of a specific security assignment in a Direct Supervision facility whose population is comprised of adult male and female prisoners under confinement following court action. In general, this Correctional Officer does not supervise other employees but is required to supervise inmates in both residential and activity assignments. Correctional Officers not only assist in safety and security, but also in efficient operations and rehabilitative measures.
QUALIFICATIONS: Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age. Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent required. Maryland Correctional Academy and/or college-level course work in penology, psychology, criminal justice, or related field is desirable. Applicants must, within the first year of employment, complete a training course approved by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission. Applicants must have an ability to: enforce institutional rules firmly and fairly, detect potential behavior problems of inmates, detect early symptoms of common health problems, carry out oral and written directions accurately, monitor/supervise the activities of large groups of inmates, deal with persons displaying asocial and anti-social behavior, and prepare records and reports. The Correctional Officer must display maturity, understanding, fairness and tact, exemplary grooming, and genuine respect for authority at all times. Candidates are subject to a thorough background investigation which includes a full employment history check, a credit check, a criminal history records check, and a driving records check. In addition, candidates must successfully complete a physical agility test and a medical examination that includes a drug test and a mental stability examination prior to employment. COMPENSATION: This is a full-time non-exempt bargaining unit position for Allegany County. Starting salary $35,071 with a complete benefits package including life and health insurance, paid leave, and pension.
