Accommodations Specialist
Summary of Position
The Accommodations Specialist will work with other members of the Disabilities Resources team to provide appropriate accommodations and support services to students with disabilities as needed and required by law. Duties of the Accommodations Specialist will include participation in the intake process for students who are registering with Disabilities Resources, assistance with the administration and proctoring of student exams, support the implementation of the new note taking system (Glean) including the provision of instruction and training for students on using the system and taking efficient and useful notes, organize and coordinate ESA requests, and the provision of on-going support and advocacy for students working with Disabilities Resources. This is a 12-month position that will report to the Director of Disabilities Resources within the Academic Affairs division of the University.
Education Requirements
A Bachelor’s degree is required for this position. A graduate level degree in Special Education, Counseling, Psychology, or other related field is strongly preferred.
Length of Experience
1-3 years of experience in the provision and administration of accommodations for individuals with disabilities in an educational setting is required. Experience in higher education and/or disabilities services provision at the college level is preferred.
Special Skills or Experience
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- The ability to manage difficult and/or stressful situations with tact and sensitivity, while maintaining the confidentiality of the parties involved
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to pay close attention to detailed issues
- Significant knowledge of special education law, particularly as it applies to individuals in higher education settings (ADAA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, etc.)
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications, especially as it pertains to the maintenance of student records
- Familiarity with assistive technology tools

General Purpose of Position

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist with intake of new students, including review of pertinent records, participation in approval process of accommodations, and the orientation of new students to Disabilities Resources.
- Coordinate timely access to accommodations for students with disabilities who are registering with the Disabilities Resources office.
- Maintain confidential files and records for students with disabilities.
- Make appropriate referrals to campus resources for students with disabilities when needed.
- Support the administration and proctoring of student tests and exams as needed. This may require occasional evening and weekend work during critical time periods.
- Assistance in the provision and maintenance of the student note taking system and work with students who may need additional note taking support.
- Organize and coordinate with the Emotional Support Animal (ESA) committee regarding all emotional support animal requests. Set-up recurring monthly meetings to review new requests that are submitted to the DR office. Keep up-to-date data regarding ESA requests and make certain data is available and communication is maintained with Residence Life, Physical Plant, and any other appropriate campus partners.
- Facilitate student requests for students requiring documentation and certification for accommodations related to standardized exams, study abroad, etc.
- Participation in the provision of disabilities awareness programming for the Elon community, which includes students, faculty, and staff.
