Coordinator/Instructor, Business & Industry Training

The jobholder is an integral part of the Business and Industry Training team in the development and delivery of training, job analysis, needs assessment, skills assessment, screening, and professional development services to employers in Guilford County. Other responsibilities may include instruction in the classroom or on-line, and managing projects designed to improve the division’s operation and training success, particularly in the identified cluster areas of advanced manufacturing, aviation, bio-technology, logistics, and health care. Other training areas include operations management, quality, safety, and industrial technology.
The jobholder is responsible for increasing the number of Guilford County businesses and employees served by the Business & Industry Training program at GTCC, by matching essential developmental needs with targeted training solutions. The jobholder builds and maintains long term relationships with regional industry partners. S/he uses marketing, advertising, and sales creatively to maximize market penetration and brand recognition. The jobholder provides exceptional customer service and ensures high customer satisfaction.
• Provide coordination /supervision/ project management for Business and Industry Training activities from client needs assessment/proposal development through registration, delivery, course evaluation and invoicing processes involving client contact and participants, staff, adjunct instructors and/or 3rd party providers; help manage budgeted training funds, department corporate contracts and service agreements.
• Contact new and existing customers to discuss their training needs and to explain how these opportunities could be met by specific training products and services from GTCC. Introduce appropriate training solutions based on the client’s needs. Answer customer’s questions about programs, costs, delivery options, and terms of training. Prepare proposals based on client’s agreements and forward for approval.
• Demonstrate proficiency in teaching, classroom management, advising students and responding to their needs. Prepare and deliver training classes within the identified cluster areas of advanced manufacturing, aviation, bio-technology, logistics, and health care relating to incumbent’s area of expertise; develop customized, results-based training; identify new curriculum needs and course offerings according to changing requirements for regional employers.
• Monitor industry statistics, collect data, scan trade journals, and follow trends in regional economic clusters. Develop new training (open-enrollment courses) for the benefit of businesses in the service area; supervise required class setup for Business & Industry Training projects; provide institutional support and work cooperatively with B&I Coordinators and Continuing Education colleagues on division initiatives.
• Interview, select and hire/rehire p/t adjunct instructors. Manage schedules against ACA and college requirements. Interview and select appropriate 3rd party training providers and process through required purchasing/finance procedures for approval. Provide course evaluation feedback to instructor as available. Assist adjunct instructors with content and delivery prep as needed.
• Analyze employer training needs to ensure results-based outcomes. Apply methods to measure pre/post training outcomes and calculate net benefit of training (Return on Investment).
• Encourage and support faculty and staff in improving their technical skills, knowledge, and/or teaching skills. Pursue own professional development skills training. Have sound knowledge of College operations and resources to provide assistance or ‘one bounce’ referrals to colleagues, students, or guests to address questions/needs.
• Demonstrate and model the College’s employability skills: adaptability, communication, information processing, problem solving, responsibility and teamwork.
• Perform all duties as assigned by supervisor.
• Managing/coordinating multiple client requests/programs, and developing classes, with limited delivery resources.
• Managing conflicting process timelines for internal administrative processes versus client request. Knowing how and whom to influence to expedite processes to meet timelines when needed.
• Class scheduling, including instructor, location, materials, equipment, and quick decisions and follow up communications about class schedule adjustments due to weather, instructor illness, material delays, etc.
• Discerning best training solution and investment proposal (revenue/FTE generating project) to benefit client and college.
• Managing multiple customized training programs, and analyzing budget plan versus actual over the 3 year life of the project.
• Understanding administrative timelines for open enrollment course planning and delivery, and client specified training delivery.
• Managing the paperwork process: contracts, registration, supply orders, etc.
• Daily: Business & Industry administration re updates, assignments scheduling, all course setup, changes, contracts, approval flows, records management.
• Daily: Director of B&I Training re advising, planning, project updates, problem solving, receiving division communications.
• Daily: multiple instructors (adjunct, 3rd party, GTCC faculty, colleagues) re planning, scheduling, assignments, availability, course feedback, course developmental questions, proposal development, negotiating.
• Daily: multiple clients re selling, developing and delivering training, resolving schedule/delivery problems, discussing potential training solutions, updating program progress.
• Daily: Continuing Education Registrar staff re paperwork and updates.
• Weekly: Accounting /Finance/ Purchasing staff re 3rd party vendors, accounts payable, accounts receivable, budget questions, material order follow-up.
• Monthly: GTCC staff and faculty re discussions, training space planning.
• Bachelor’s degree required from a regionally accredited college in a field including, but not limited to Business Administration, Industrial Engineering, Organizational Development, Public Administration, Human Resources or other related field.
• Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree and a combination of related experience and demonstrated competencies will be considered.
• Master’s degree preferred from a regionally accredited college.
• 2 years of project management in multiple discipline areas.
• Successful workforce training experience is required.
• Demonstrated success in project management required. An understanding of regional and industry needs as well as national and international needs for job skills training. Ability to collaborate with Work Force Development Board, Economic Development Councils, Chambers of Commerce and other support agencies to provide business and industry training.
• 5 years of successful experience in business or industry, with supervisory or management experience preferred.
• A proven track record in client-centered, business-to-business relationship building.
• Experience in developing and implementing business/industrial training, instructional design, employee development, or adult education.
• Experience with the NCCCS Customized Training Program.
• Experience in development of a project/program budget.
• Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of management within participating corporate organizations.
• Strong problem-solving skills.
• An understanding of the needs, structures and applications of quality control and continuous improvement requirements.
• Knowledge of operational disciplines including quality, planning, scheduling, strategic planning, project management, management information systems, budgeting, and accounting.
• Ability to work as a vital part of a team, while being self-directed on projects and sales.
• Strong knowledge of industrial technology and training; up to date knowledge on best practices in the classroom; excellent technical skills, including use of office and web-based software; conversant in core industrial concepts such as operations management, planning and scheduling, quality, warehousing, distribution, continuous improvement, lean, and safety; and willingness to achieve related certifications as deemed necessary.
• Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
• A successful track record in facilitation, employee training, and program development.
• Evidence of sales skills to understand client needs, develop proposed solutions and ‘close the deal’.
• Strong organization skills to manage the priorities and communications of multiple college resources, clients, and projects.
• Frequent travel to client locations and other GTCC campuses for training and communication; some hours during the night and weekend may be required; occasional trips out of town and perhaps out of state may be required.
• Ability to sit, stand, walk and drive.
• Personal protection equipment as required by clients on visits.
• Extended hours to include client meetings/negotiations and program management in the evenings and on Saturdays, as appropriate and work on “non-college” days as required
• Travel as needed to meet program goals, gain information, education and training required for professional development/enhanced performance.
• Ability to lift, move, transport, and set up laptops, projectors, chart pad easels, boxes of books and/or materials.
• Ability to set up classroom (move or coordinate movement of tables, chairs) for effective training delivery and participation.
