The Research Data Technician supports Frontier Set efforts to maintain and enhance a data-driven environment. The person in this position must be capable of writing queries to extract raw data from diverse sources of campus data including the ERP, Colleague. This person must be able to join, manipulate and analyze data to support requests for information needed for the Frontier Set Grant and related student metrics. This includes writing, running, and troubleshooting Base SAS code to enhance and facilitate reporting solutions.
This position will be responsible for developing datasets (primarily using SAS and SQL programming) to support the Frontier Set submission of student data to the National Student Clearinghouse. The person in this position must utilize a variety of applications to produce reliable, accurate, and dependable information. The incumbent must be able to communicate effectively with others in Institutional Research and other areas of GTCC as well as individuals at the National Student Clearinghouse, Aspen Institute, and American Institutes for Research.
• Utilize available tools (Informer, SQL, Base SAS, Excel, Access) to write queries, extract data and render reports through various mediums.
• Coordinate the bi-annual Frontier Set data submissions.
• Review and determine accuracy of data reports from the National Student Clearinghouse.
• Engage National Student Clearinghouse and American Institutes for Research to identify any problem areas and coordinate GTCC response to remedies.
• Assess Postsecondary Data Partnership (PDP) accuracy and utility. Identify benefits of the PDP to Guilford Technical Community College.
• Provide data collection and analyses of Frontier Set and other related student success metrics.
• Identify data anomalies and work with the Director of Institutional Research and the area responsible for these data to clean up the data for reporting and improve data fidelity.
• Attend Frontier Set events as needed.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Mathematics, or related field from a regionally accredited post-secondary institution.
• Master’s degree in Computer Science, Information systems, Mathematics, or related field from a regionally accredited post-secondary institution.
• Proficient in writing, running, and troubleshooting Base SAS code
• Experience in Excel, Word, Access and/or a database querying tool
• Experience recognizing and working with data anomalies.
• Proven experience with communicating verbally and through the writing the results and implications of data analyses.
• Experience with SQL
• Experience with Ellucian Colleague, or similar ERP system
• Experience with Informer or similar ERP querying tool
• Knowledge of dashboards
• Proven skills in sophisticated use of data management and reporting tools such as SAS, Excel, Access.
• Understanding of FERPA as it relates to student data.
• Uncompromising attention to accuracy and detail.
• Understanding of best practices in data visualization.
• Ability to develop SAS and/or SQL queries to extract, manipulate, and/or calculate information to fulfill data and reporting requirements.
• The ability to work effectively with all segments of the college and outside agencies such as National Student Clearinghouse, AIR, and Aspen Institute.
• Demonstrated resourcefulness in identifying solutions to problems that arise in responding to unexpected and time-sensitive requests for information.
• Ability to work well with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
• Familiarity (developed with direct experience) with higher education organizational structure and business processes.
• High level of knowledge regarding industry best practices established for business intelligence reporting and applicability to a higher education environment.
