Job Summary

The McNair Program Coordinator coordinates individualized services designed to provide scholars with graduate/professional school preparation and individual assistance. The Coordinator will work with staff, faculty, students, and others throughout the campus community to support the program goals and objectives. The Coordinator is also responsible for developing, implementing, and coordinating operational activities.

Perform other duties and responsibilities as required, assigned, or requested.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree required in higher education administration, student development, counseling, social work, or STEM-related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience providing academic, career, and financial advising, and assisting underrepresented college students with scholarly activities, graduate school admissions, and financial aid processes.
  • Experience coordinating tutorial, mentoring, and program activities.
  • Experience with student needs assessment and degree planning.
  • Knowledge of assessments, data collection, learning styles, educational advising strategies, academic plans, financial aid, and developing non-cognitive behaviors for success.
  • Ability to track participant retention, graduation, and successes.
  • Ability to develop assessment and evaluation tools for data collection and academic services.
  • Experience with maintaining a caseload of participants and providing them with documented services.
  • Knowledge of graduate school admissions procedures, resources, and national research presentation opportunities.
  • Ability to establish, and maintain effective working relationships with students and faculty from various racial and ethnic groups and underrepresented populations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in collegiate teaching or working with federal TRIO programs, academic support programs, or similar programs serving underrepresented college students.
  • Knowledge in effective student “coaching” methods including goal setting, advocacy, and time management.
  • Knowledge of barriers and challenges to postsecondary education faced by underrepresented college students.
Conditions of Employment

This position is located on the campus of Old Dominion University.
  • Must be available to work occasional weekend events, overnight travel as well as evenings.
  • A valid Driver's License
