Collections & Services comprises the library departments that select, describe, make discoverable, and preserve the research and unique materials needed to support the university community's research needs; partner with and support faculty in teaching students to critically assess and engage with research materials and practices; connect with the campus and Santa Cruz community in the development of campus and community archives, and provide UCSC authors support in effectively navigating the evolving scholarly communication landscape.

JOB SUMMARY

The University Library Collections Strategy Analyst will join the Collections & Services team in a key role to support the library's data-informed review and assessment approach to the acquisition and provision of access to the materials that meet the UCSC community's dynamic research, teaching, and learning objectives. In consultation with the AUL, Collections, and Services, the Collections Analyst will gather data from a variety of sources and synthesize it into outputs that offer insights to help guide the UCSC Library's collections acquisition and access strategies and directly support UC-wide and local (UCSC) actions to diversify the University Library collection. The Collections analyst will lead in the review of existing data collection and assessment practices; review existing and recommend new data input sources; update campus divisional demographic usage models; assess and refine data collection workflows; conduct usage assessment analysis for general collections including shared print assessment activities; create reports and visualizations that effectively communicate collections acquisition and access results to internal and external stakeholders, and establish and lead a cross-departmental team in the coordination of the library's collections assessment strategies.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $89,350 - $104,400/Annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

70% - Data Collection, Analysis, and Reporting: applicable academic library practices, processes, systems and standards.

  • Gathers, analyzes, normalizes, and integrates bibliometric, financial, and other types of data and information from multiple sources to develop complex aggregated reports and data outputs.
  • Plans and executes data collection methodologies, creates data reporting templates and tools and develops effective queries and reports.
  • Applies technical expertise and business analysis concepts to coordinate, refine, and evaluate outputs to meet collection assessment requirements.
  • Analyzes and summarizes data and other information for purposes of reporting, visualization, and assessment.


20% - Communication and Consultation

  • Collaborates with AUL, Collections & Services, and library stakeholders to define the goals, parameters, and expected outcomes of data analysis work.
  • Communicates recommendations and results and gathers feedback to iterate and improve collection assessment outputs.
  • Convenes and works with a cross-departmental collection assessment team to coordinate the library's collections assessment strategies and goals.


10% - Process Documentation

  • Documents workflows, and methodologies for assessment, and prepares final documentation for dissemination purposes.
  • Refreshes documentation as workflows evolve.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Demonstrated efforts toward creating an inclusive working environment and a sensitivity for ways that racism, ableism, and sexism appear in academic library collection development and academic publishing practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce reports in a variety of formats for easy interpretation and use, and to design and prepare graphs, tables, and other visuals.
  • Ability to work with and analyze and interpret financial and bibliometric data (e.g., book, journal, film usage, cost data).
  • Ability to identify appropriate data sources and methodologies to develop informed strategies and recommendations to improve, clarify, or effect policy and practice.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills as demonstrated by the ability to articulate/express ideas, thoughts, and information in a logical manner and sequence to summarize complex issues clearly and succinctly.
  • Ability to communicate complex information to both technical and non-technical staff at various levels in the organization.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Self-motivated and able to work both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Able to consistently meet deadlines.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or relevant experience and/or training.
  • Demonstrated advanced qualitative and quantitative analytical skills to develop, assess, and synthesize information from multiple sources on a broad range of issues.
  • Experience with data visualization tools and techniques.
  • Familiarity with academic journal publishing developments, practices, models, standards, and trends, or equivalent background and experience.


SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
  • The selected candidate has the option to work a hybrid work schedule. If a hybrid work schedule is confirmed, the selected candidate must be able to work successfully from a home/remote office and be able to fulfill the requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
