MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of GED and five years of progressively responsible experience in the public work activities. CDL and Grade C Water Operator license required at time of hire.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is an important position in the village government involving immediate responsibility for activities in the broad field of public works. The particular activities directed by the individual may vary from one village to another but a common function of all positions is the responsibility for maintenance and the repair of streets. Depending on the individual village additional responsibilities may also include supervision of water and sewer systems, maintenance of parks and public buildings, water filtration plants and sewage treatment plants. The work is performed under administrative direction from the Board of the Trustees and direct supervision from the Mayor in accordance with established policies and recognized technical and administrative procedures. The superintendent in responsible for seeing that the procedures are followed. Supervision may be exercised over a subordinate labor force and occasionally over projects involving outside contractors. Does related work as required. 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

Supervises and inspects the cleaning and maintenance of streets and storm systems;

Plans and directs the installation and maintenance of water mains, meters, pipes and other fixtures and equipment connected with the village water supply systems;

May be responsible for the operation and maintenance and daily testing of the water village treatment plant; 

Has charge of the maintenance and repair of public sidewalks, curbs and village parks; 

Supervises the relocation and rebuilding of sewer and manholes necessitated by changes in street grades; 

Has responsibility for maintenance of all mobile and non-mobile equipment used by the Public Works Department;

Directs the periodic flushing of water mains;

Has investigations made when complaints are received regarding any of the activities of the Department; 

Prepares requisitions for supplies and equipment and directly purchases minor items of supply;

Confers with Village Board on budgetary and other needs of the Department;

Makes periodic reports to the Village Board concerning all activities of the Department.
